Enterprise Thinking #006: Better Information Doesn't Always Mean Better Answers

In our previous Thinking Series article, we explored why better questions need better information.

Information is the foundation of every decision.

But having good information doesn't automatically give us the right answer.

Information still needs to be understood.

Information Needs Context

Imagine looking at a sales report.

You notice that sales have dropped by 15%.

That is information.

But it doesn't explain why.

Did customers buy less?

Did prices change?

Was a product unavailable?

Did a competitor launch a new promotion?

The number tells us what happened.

Understanding tells us why.

Facts Don't Make Decisions

Businesses collect facts every day.

Sales figures.

Financial reports.

Customer feedback.

Operational data.

Contracts.

Policies.

These are all valuable.

But facts alone don't make decisions.

People interpret them.

They compare them.

They discuss them.

They consider different possibilities.

Only then do they decide what to do next.

AI Can Help Us Understand

This is where AI becomes valuable.

AI can analyse large amounts of information.

It can identify patterns.

It can summarize documents.

It can compare reports.

It can highlight things we may have overlooked.

But AI isn't making the business decision.

It's helping us understand the information more quickly.

The decision still belongs to people.

Better Answers Come From Better Understanding

Imagine two people reading the same report.

One notices declining sales.

The other notices that sales only declined in one region after a competitor entered the market.

Both looked at the same information.

One gained a deeper understanding.

The difference wasn't the data.

It was how the information was interpreted.

Why This Matters

Many people ask,

"Can AI give me the answer?"

Perhaps a better question is,

"Can AI help me understand the information?"

Once we understand the situation,

we're in a much better position to make the right decision.
