In our previous articles of our Enterprise Thinking Series, we explored how businesses change, why responsibilities evolve, and how people grow along with them.

As our responsibilities change, so do the questions we ask.

But why do good questions matter?

The answer is actually quite simple.

We ask questions because we want something.

Every Question Has A Purpose

We don't ask questions because we enjoy asking them.

We ask because we need an answer.

When we visit a doctor, we're looking for a diagnosis or treatment.

When we take a taxi, we're trying to get somewhere.

When we ask a colleague for help, we're trying to solve a problem.

The question is simply how we explain what we need.

We Want The Right Answer

Most of us want the same thing.

We want the right answer.

As quickly as possible.

We've all asked a question and received an answer that wasn't quite what we were looking for.

So we ask again.

We explain it differently.

We add more detail.

Not because the other person couldn't help.

But because they didn't fully understand what we meant.

What Makes A Good Question?

A good question isn't about using bigger words.

It isn't about making the question longer.

A good question helps the other person understand what you're asking for.

Imagine asking,

"Can you help me?"

The natural reply is,

"Help you with what?"

Now imagine asking,

"Can you help me understand why customer complaints increased over the last three months?"

Nothing complicated changed.

The purpose became clearer.

And that makes it much easier to provide a useful answer.

Business Is No Different

Every day, people ask questions like:

  • Why are sales falling?

  • Which supplier should we choose?

  • Why are costs increasing?

  • Which customers should we focus on?

These aren't just questions.

They're decisions waiting to be made.

The clearer the question,

the easier it is to find the right information.

The easier it is to understand the situation.

And the easier it is to make a better decision.

AI Works The Same Way

Many people think working with AI is about writing the perfect prompt.

Perhaps it's simpler than that.

AI responds to what we ask.

If we're unclear, the response is often general.

If we're clear, the response is usually more useful.

The difference isn't always the technology.

Often, it's how clearly we've explained what we're trying to achieve.

Why This Matters

Learning to ask good questions isn't just about working with AI.

It's about thinking clearly.

Whether we're talking to a doctor, a colleague, a customer, or AI, the same principle applies.

The clearer we explain what we need,

the easier it becomes for others to help us.

One Thought to Leave You With...

We don't ask questions because we enjoy asking them.

We ask because we need an answer.

A good question helps others understand what we need.

And when people understand us better,

they're much more likely to give us a useful answer.
