Enterprise Thinking #005: Better Questions Need Better Information

In our previous Enterprise Thinking article, we explored why good questions matter.
A clear question helps others understand what we're trying to achieve.
But asking a good question is only part of the journey.
To give a useful answer, we also need the right information.
Without it, even the best question may still lead to the wrong conclusion.
Information Shapes Decisions
Every decision we make is based on information.
When a doctor makes a diagnosis, they don't rely on a single symptom.
They ask questions, review test results, and consider medical history.
The quality of the diagnosis depends on the quality of the information available.
Business decisions work the same way.
Whether we're deciding which supplier to choose, why sales have slowed, or how to improve customer satisfaction, our decisions are only as good as the information we have.
More Information Isn't Always Better
Today, organizations have access to more information than ever before.
Sales reports.
Financial statements.
Customer feedback.
Emails.
Documents.
Dashboards.
The challenge is rarely having too little information.
The challenge is knowing which information is relevant.
Too much information can be just as unhelpful as too little.
Finding What Matters
Good information isn't simply about quantity.
It's about relevance.
Imagine asking,
"Why have customer complaints increased?"
Looking at last year's sales figures probably won't help.
Reviewing recent customer feedback, support tickets, and product changes is much more likely to reveal the answer.
The goal isn't to collect everything.
It's to find the information that matters.
AI Can Only Work With What It Knows
This is where AI becomes interesting.
AI doesn't automatically know your business.
It doesn't know your customers, policies, contracts, or internal reports unless you make that information available.
The quality of its responses depends largely on the quality of the information it can access.
Better information helps AI provide more relevant responses.
Why This Matters
Many organizations focus on choosing the latest AI model.
But before thinking about the model, it's worth asking another question.
Do we have the right information?
Technology can help us process information faster.
It cannot replace information that doesn't exist or isn't available.
One Thought to Leave You With...
Better questions help us find better information.
Better information helps us make better decisions.
Before asking whether AI has the answer, ask whether the information needed to answer the question is available.
